Celebrating Earth Day 2020 may be a little different from the past. But more than ever, we need to talk about our future and making an effort – big or small – for our planet.
April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day where the world comes together to support environmental action. The theme for this year is ‘Climate Action’, and for the entire Earth Day week, the celebration will take place online through digital action, conversations, performances, video teach-ins and more.
We’ve seen firsthand what were the consequences of our actions, such as the unprecedented bush-fire in Australia last year that put Australia’s biodiversity at critical risk, with some species pushed to the brink of extinction.
Doing our part for the Earth is not a 1-day event, nor just a week-long commitment, it is about putting our thoughts into action to save the Earth together.
One of the easiest way to do it is investing a little more on environmentally-friendly products that make a huge difference to our plastic footprint. There are plenty of green goods out there that are not only eco-conscious, they can help you save money in the long run too!
Here are 10 eco-friendly Earth Day picks to join in the fight against plastic pollution and more.
What: Did you know that Singaporeans use 22 million plastic straws every single day? It is time to replace those straws with bamboo straws, which is a 100% all-natural reusable alternative. Bamboo itself is a renewable material that already grows in hollow shape, and can last for many months. These straws are specially made for your favourite beverage – bubble tea, as they are wider in circumference, guaranteed to be able to suck up any boba pearls or toppings.
Made by Bamboo Straw Girl, a homegrown Singapore social enterprise that was the first ‘zero-waste lifestyle’ store in Singapore even before “zero-waste” became a buzzword!
A set of 3 Boba Sharp Edge Bamboo Straws is priced at $12. Free shipping for orders above $30.
What: Perhaps you already have your reusable straws in your bag, but have you thought of the things around you that are also made up of plastic? It’s all around us and every single bit of plastic ever made still exists in some form today. Conventional plastic toothbrushes use a significant amount of unnecessary plastic that these bamboo toothbrushes can easily help to avoid.
The bristles on the bamboo toothbrush is made of nylon, and can be easily removed from the brush handle, which can then be composted or reused for other purposes. With proper care, your bamboo toothbrush will last as long as a regular plastic toothbrush. Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush at least once every 3 months or when their bristles have frayed.
Sizes: Child and Adult sizes
What: We love our mee pok and nasi goreng. Most office workers will agree that when you dabao your favourite hawker food, you would probably use the disposable plastic forks and spoons or those wooden chopsticks available. It’s scary to think about how many you would use in a year!
The wooden cutlery by Bamboo Straw Girl is a lightweight and easy zero-waste addition to your handbag or everyday kit. Beautifully wrapped in a batik fabric, you can mix-and-match your cutlery choices to suit your different food cravings. A big plus for frequent travellers is the fact that wooden cutlery is air-travel friendly — you won’t be stopped at customs!
The cutlery set ranges from $13 – $16 (fork/spoon/knife/chopsticks set).
What: If you enjoy carrying around your personal cutlery wherever you go, consider this cutlery box set where the box is made from agricultural wheat by-products, which can be used for many years. Each complete set comes with a stainless steel fork, spoon, and chopsticks with beechwood handle.
The cutlery box set is priced at $15.
What: Water is precious and we always wished we could save more whenever we receive our monthly SP (Singapore Power) bills. Let’s face it, we believe we are gardeners in our own right (just look at the many potted plants in your neighbourhood) but not many of us are bestowed with green fingers.
Achieve those gardening dreams with a self-watering planter that has a built-in water reservoir that stores water so as to reduce the frequency of watering. It even has a water level indicator that ensures your plant is always properly hydrated, adjustable to indoor or outdoor use.
A pot of ICES self-watering planter is priced at $13.90.
What: Beauty and grooming comes with a price, including our plastic footprints on Earth. Most of us throw away our razors after a few times, or replace the blade after a few shaves. For men, shaving has become a ritual and finding the right product can be tough.
The Leaf Razor system contains all the tools you need to use, store, display and maintain in your shaving process. The starter kit comes with a razor, solid metal stand, 50 blades, and a safety blade disposer. After a few shaves, switch out the individual blades and discard the used ones in the blade disposer; since they’ve made from metal, they can be recycled. Best yet, the pack of 50 blades is equivalent to between 40 and 50 disposable cartridges!
The Leaf Razor Starter Bundle comes in five colours and is priced at $155.50 (conversion to SGD).
What: Imagine you can reuse your notebook over and over again just by erasing the doodles and words on it. In addition, all your precious information will be saved and easily accessible, instead of rummaging through your cupboard for something you’d written a year ago.
The Rocketbook Wave is the ‘it’ notebook that provides the freedom of a traditional pen and paper notebook, while instantly blasting your notes into the cloud using your smartphone. Here’s the interesting part: when you use the Pilot FriXion pens with the Wave notebook, you can erase your notes using a microwave oven and reuse your notebook! How cool is that!
The Rocketbook Wave includes 1 Pilot FriXion pen and is priced at $35.70 (conversion to SGD).

What: Singapore is a sunny and humid country where even a minute under the scorching sun will result in sweaty pits. Remember the odour in your school of office after your lunch break? Yep. Not exactly the memories we want to keep. Deodorant helps to neutralise the smell of sweat and keep you going for the rest of the day without feeling embarrassed.
The Meow Meow Tweet deodorant stick is an all-natural, vegan and organic product that is ideal for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin. It is also packaged in a biodegradable push-pop style tube with adorable designs.
Types: 2 scents – Lavender Bergamot, Eucalyptus Lemon
The Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Stick is priced at $23.90, and can be purchased from local distributor, Living Naturally Co.
