Think Steampunk is dead? Not so fast. The opening of Rails Club at 21 Tanjong Pagar Road, even amidst a pandemic, proves that this is not the case. The club is located within a row of striking colonial-era shophouses, with red brick exteriors and white cornices. Rails Club also happens to be the brainchild of A Phat Cat Collective, the same folks behind Pinball Wizard and NINETEEN80.
They describe Rails Club as being inspired by Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, one of Singapore’s oldest and grandest buildings – it is also the future site of Cantonment MRT Station. Fittingly enough, the décor both within the club and on its menu feature motifs related to traveling in the days of yore.
Think steam-powered trains, huge interlocking gears and old timey passport stamps.
The items on the menu are also a nod to the era beloved by Steampunk aficionados. Just in terms of drinks, for instance, there’s Murder On The Orient Express (absinthe, coffee liqueur, activated charcoal, pear, pineapple juice, orange juice). There’s also Zeppelin’s Martini (gin, smoked vodka, white vermouth, olive brine, orgeat and cucumber). And lest you think they’ve forgotten that this is a Steampunk club in Singapore, there’s the Apothecary (cognac, amaro and pi pa gao).
As for the food, you’ll be relieved to know that instead of dining on jellied eels, there will be plenty of comfort food. This is because Rails Club has partnered up with the fashionable and immensely popular Chix Hot Chicken from Jalan Pisang! In fact, Chix Hot Chicken will be in charge of the food at Rails Club.
Longtime fans of Chix Hot Chicken can also try new items, which are exclusive to Rails Club, such as the Wakie Brekkie Wrap. Think of it as the ultra deluxe version of the regular Chicken Sausage Wrap from McDonald’s. Instead of chicken sausage bits, you’ll get chicken tenders and of course, a whole lot more cheese.
For patrons who prefer meatless burgers, they’ll be happy to know that quorn alternatives are available for pretty much every item on the menu.
Since music is a large part of the experience at any club, you’re probably more than a little curious by now as to what kind of music Rails Club will play. According to their website, it will be a mix of House and Disco music. We’re not sure if samples from Steampunk music royalty Abney Park will be included but we wouldn’t be surprised.
