The most popular religious account on Twitter probably belongs to the @DalaiLama, at over 19.3 million followers. The Dalai Lama is followed closely behind by @Pontifex, Pope Francis himself with 18.7 million followers. By the way, did you know that both the Dalai Lama and Pope Francis go by His Holiness? Does anybody know what the plural of that is? His Holinesses? Their Holinesses?
Now, here’s something you may not know. A rising star has been emerging out of religious Twitter, out of our little sunny island.
@halalSG is the official account of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) on Halal food and queries relating to certification. With 74.4 thousand followers, their follower count is not as massive as Their Holinesses, but is definitely respectable.
When religious venues were closed during the period approaching the circuit breaker, they posted content like 8 Ways To Get Closer To Allah At Home and 3 Reasons You Should Not Be Anxious About Missing Friday Prayers, to soothe the worries of their followership.
In addition to inspirational religious quotes and answering questions like whether X eatery is halal, @halalSG also finds the time to participate in memes and post cat .gifs.
They also have this pinned to the top of their Twitter page.
It’s a series of short tweets on the in and outs of halal food in Singapore.
Here’s a quick rundown on the facts:
If you’re still unsure, you can always check with @HalalSG, or check out singaporehalaldirectory.com.
Remember, a generic logo does not halal make.
And now, our favourite hits from @HalalSG, which are not related to Halal certification.
Here’s their iteration of the “We have a joke but…” meme:
As mentioned, the mysterious admin of the page tweet cat .gifs every so often.
They are bomb.
Anyhoo, here’s a cat gif for you on this rainy day! pic.twitter.com/bJ6SIl2hC9

We don’t know who is behind Muis’s @halalSG page but we have some theories.
What are you favourite halal places to eat in Singapore? Do you agree that cats are just better than us at memes?
