If you have plans with that special someone during this Valentine’s Day weekend, make it a museum date! The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) at 1 Empress Place is having their open house event from now to 28 February. What’s so special about the open house? The entry fee has been slashed from the usual price of $20 to just $6!
Have you and your boo has been an item for a hot minute or are you so bonded you finish each other’s sentences? Whatever the case may be, Perfect Stranger by Singaporean artist Dawn Ng may just be the thing for you two to explore together.
Dawn Ng distills the collected output of a year’s worth of conversation with a then acquaintance and now friend, Israeli psychologist Zehavit Efrati, into text imposed onto giant blocks.
The text presented is always white and always in all caps but the blocks have a certain phosphorescence which is unique to each piece.
As you and your date pore over snippets of the two’s conversations, you may wonder when it is when a person ceases to be a stranger and something else.
When Zehavit and Dawn talked about fighting with idiots, had they just met? Or were they already enthusiastic conversationalists, always eager to find out more about how the other thinks?
The heart of the museum is not its exhibits but the people behind them.
Faith Beauty Love Hope showcases items from the museum’s collection, from the perspective of museum staff, tenants, student volunteers, artists and collectors. Text labels that come with each item describe their thoughts – there’s even musings by the museum director himself.
With more than 60 items to consider, Faith Beauty Love Hope is sure to help you build some comfortable silence as you muse on the fate of our ancestors, fallen empires and what to have for dinner later.
