It’s nearing the end of March, which means payday is almost within grasp. But until then, many of us are looking for ways to make our last $50 stretch as long as possible. With the exorbitant prices in restaurants, it’s a headache for those of us attempting to stay frugal while trying to keep our love life alive.
Cue Food Barn, your go-to brunch spot with mains that start from as low as $9! Here, you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank to fill up your tummies with a plethora of mouthwatering mains, desserts and more!
The Food Barn started out as a modest café in the bustling Alexandra business park, serving mostly office-goers looking for a quick, affordable lunch. Since then, the Food Barn has grown into a full-fledged eatery, attracting large crowds and serving gourmet mains, drinks and desserts fit for the gram!
The eatery is dressed in hues of warm brown, with a homey industrial feel. Dangling lights, wood tables, wood decor and metal chairs make the café a welcome, casual place to eat and unwind! Plus, all the recipes are homemade and curated in-house, so you can expect nothing less than fantastic while dining.
For first-time customers, we really recommend the classic Spaghetti Carbonara ($15.90). The pasta is perfectly al-dente, drenched in a savoury cream sauce that clings to every strand of pasta. The carbonara also comes to your table topped with a perfectly poached egg that gives the dish an extra umami kick that left us coming back for more!
If pasta isn’t for you, pick from their array of loaded sandwiches! We tried the Chix Avocado ($9.50), which had grilled chicken breast, creamy avocado and tangy chipotle mayonnaise between two fluffy slices of focaccia! It was hearty, healthy and definitely hit the spot.
For a meatless option, the Grilled 4-Cheese ($9.50) is also a crowd-pleaser, with Provolone, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack and Mozzarella Cheese melted between two slices of sourdough. It also comes with tomatoes and a scrumptious pesto spread, ideal for an afternoon snack!
But if you can’t live without your meat, the De Ole Barn Burger ($15) is a classic that just can’t go wrong. With a homemade beef patty, fried egg, caramelised onions and cheddar cheese, this is sedap, filling and ideal for all the big-eaters out there.

Coffee lovers can pick from Food Barn’s generous selection of brews, made with the best, sustainably-sourced beans. We had the classic Cappuccino ($4.50), which was smooth, rich and just the right amount of bitter! An ideal cup of joe for an afternoon snack for sure.
But if coffee isn’t scoring in your books, we suggest one of the tantalising smoothies like the Guavaberry ($4.50). It’s a refreshing, tangy mix of strawberry and guava sure to cut through all the grease!
If you’re interested in a tall glass of beer, do try their Beniaka ($14) bottled beer. It’s a beer fermented from sweet potato and comes to your table a deep, golden amber colour. It’s the perfect accompaniment for any salty, fried foods!
If anything, this article proves brunch doesn’t have to be a wallet-destroying affair which leaves you getting by on cai png. At Food Barn, enjoy delicious sandwiches, burgers and pasta on a budget. Bring your friends and family down for a Sunday brunch, we guarantee everyone will be leaving with smiles on their faces!
