You know they say ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, well, that idiom goes the same with food. Sure, food on our plate has to look somewhat pleasing, appetising and these days, they even have to be Instagram-worthy.
Oozing lava cakes, dragon breath candies and golden brown fried chicken are common pictures we come across on our feed, but that doesn’t mean that the less colourful dishes aren’t delicious. They may look ugly or weird or simply unappetising, but if you are able to look past that, you are going to enjoy the goodness they bring.
Here are some food that may look unappetising till you’ve taken the first bite…
Remember the local bakery at Toa Payoh that sold some of the ugliest muffins we have ever seen? Uggli Muffins, as the name suggests, doesn’t sell you the glitz and glamour you would expect of this warm baked good, but Singaporeans say it is “one of the best (home-made) hawker muffins in Singapore”. So shiok that people are buying dozens to share with their family and friends.

Nasty Cookie's Matcha Mania
Green liquid oozing out of my green cookie may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about freshly-baked cookies, but for all you matcha lovers out there, this Matcha Mania cookie by Nasty Cookie is made of matcha dough with shortbread and white chocolate. Rule to eating this soft and warm cookie: break the cookie to reveal the molten matcha lava within…

Symmetry's Spicy Crab Pesto Linguine
Thank you, next! No vegetables or anything remotely in that vegetable family tree for me. Maybe it’s those green hues that makes picky eaters like myself particular about how food should look like. Symmetry’s pesto linguine may look like a plate of greenish sustenance, but online reviews have once again proved me wrong. Many are recommending this hearty dish for its flavourful herb pesto. Now this is next on my to-eat list!

Capri Trattoria and Pizzeria's Pizza Tartufata
Credit: Grab Food
While pizzas shown on television ads are all about ‘pulling the cheese’ and slapping the tomato sauce on the pizza dough, this is far from it. This Pizza Tartufata looks nothing like the pictures on magazines, but the list of ingredients is making me salivate - Mozzarella cheese, truffle spread, porcini mushrooms, smoked cheese and shaved Parmesan cheese. #Yums

Huat Kee Teochew Restaurant's Orh Nee
If you are a Singaporean Teochew, ask your parents and chances are they would most probably have heard of Huat Kee Teochew Restaurant. After all, this eatery has been run by three generations since 1969. The orh nee, also known as the Teochew sweet yam paste has never looked too gorgeous for the gram because of its sticky and sometimes lumpy greyish-purple texture.
However, this is a go-to dessert for most wedding banquets, birthday celebrations and even just a normal after-meal sweet treat. If you hadn’t had a bowl of orh nee before, definitely don’t judge this dish the next time you see one served on your table.

Dohkie's Cookies And Cream Cookie Dough

COOKIE DOUGH #FTW! We are screaming internally because we simply can’t get enough of edible cookie dough. No matter how bleh it may look - they aren’t exactly the best-looking form out there but cookie dough has got to be one of the most indulgent desserts one can ever ask for.

Eleven Finger's Sissors Cut Curry Rice
When it comes to scissors cut curry rice, there’s no such thing as too much gravy/curry. While this may not gather as much likes on Instagram as compared to a slice of rainbow cake, your stomach can’t thank you enough. Also, don’t waste too much time to feed your followers because savour this while its hot!

The Whisking Well's Basque Burnt Cheesecake
The basque burnt cheesecake became a huge baking trend during the circuit breaker period. The chaoda areas which are actually the best parts, makes the cake look a little less aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Some people may go as far as to say that the gooey, soft cheesecake within may seem yucky, but if you ever had a slice of the basque burnt cheesecake, you would know that however it looks on the outside is by no means any indication of how it tastes like on the inside.
