This Seventh Month, Look Out For Ghostlore

When you were growing up, were you a fan of True Singapore Ghost Stories? For many, it was a gateway drug into the darker and stranger parts of local myths and legends. While the rest of us were snacking non-stop and drinking way too much coffee during the Circuit Breaker, Singaporean game developer Andrew Teo was making Ghostlore.

Indeed, Hardcoregamer describes their first impression of Ghostlore better than we ever could – “Ghostbusters, except it’s in Singapore and it plays like Diablo.” A senior game artist for a mobile games company, Teo says working on Ghostlore helped to alleviate some of the anxiety he developed during the CB.

Tapping on Singapore’s rich, multicultural font of spooky creatures and creepy legends, players will find themselves pitted against enemies like the pontianak, pocong and ergui while navigating the coastal town of Seaport. Currently, Seaport has four main areas, Seaport the town itself, Pulau Ayer Merah, Pulau Hijawan and Pulau Kubor.

There are currently 3 classes for players to choose from and all of them come with some local flavour. The requisite tank, the Reaver, wields a parang and shield. The mage, or Arcanist, wields a Kris and a magic talisman. The Hitman, a rogue-like character, wields a bow and Gurkha blades.

A strong believer in community-driven game development, Ghostlore has a strong social media outreach despite being a one-man-show. Teo regularly posts updates on the game’s progress on Twitter, Facebook and there are also multiple Reddit threads made on the r/singapore subreddit, filling in and engaging in discussion with many Singaporean gamers.

Here are some snippets of their lively discussions:

There are, of course, a handful of easter eggs that probably only Singaporeans and long-term residents of the island can appreciate, from durians to pipagao.

Are you ready to try your hand at a video game with some serious local spice and go head-to-head with a pocong? What are some local spooky encounters you are looking forward experiencing in Ghostlore? Personally, I am looking forward to running into the jiangshi, AKA my childhood best friend, again.
