The Ground-Up Initiative

Ground-Up Initiative, or better known as GUI, is a non-profit organisation working towards building a greener, more sustainable future for Singapore. They provide workshops, tours and activities for Singaporeans of all ages in an eco-village called Kampung Kampus.

Their belief in the five G’s: Gracious, Green, Giving, Grateful and Grounded sets the foundation for keeping the 21st-century kampung spirit alive! Their workshops are rooted in encouraging a sustainable lifestyle for all Singaporeans, conducted in the heart of the eco-village for the authentic kampung experience!

So if you’re interested to learn more about sustainable living in Singapore while reliving your kampung days, here are three activities you can do at the Kampung Kampus!

 

1. Kampung Journey

Embark on the Kampung Journey, a stroll through the Kampung Kampus, where you can learn all about the GUI mission, events, workshops and more from experienced guides.

Get up close and personal with the eco-village and learn more about how the Kampung Kampus is maintained. Indulge in the abundance of greenery, farms and plantations at every turn! With small rivers passing through the plantations and children running around, it’s sure to be a nostalgic experience!

2. Learn About Soil Regeneration

With GUI’s Soil Regeneration programme, be prepared to learn about all things soil! Everything from the different soil types and their uses to using natural farming methods. Safe to say, this is one workshop perfect for all the aspiring green thumbs out there!

During this workshop, you will be treated to a 30-minute trail through the Kampung Kampus, where you can get up close and personal with the vegetation around the eco-village. Observe the variety of soil life and structures and hear from experienced growers on soil health’s impact on growing sustainably.

3. Experience The Joy Of Harvesting

If you have a love for getting your hands dirty, then this is the workshop for you! With the Experience The Joy Of Harvesting workshop, you’ll get to learn how to harvest an array of vegetables by hand! Plus, you’ll get to take home some of the freshly plucked greens!

Just like the old kampung days, get ready to work up a sweat on one of Kampung Kampus’s many plantations, learning the proper way to handle and harvest different produce. With experienced instructors on hand to guide you, it’s sure to be an educational and fulfilling experience for all!
