Food waste is one of the key sustainability and greening buzzwords, in Singapore and beyond. Every night, eateries throw out loads of unsold food as they are unable to bring them forward to the next day. As a result, our carbon footprints have increased tremendously, contributing to global warming and climate change. Cue flashback of Ah Ma entering a tirade about starving children in certain third-world countries…
Thankfully, we stumbled upon some entrepreneurs in Singapore who have made a business out of reducing waste.
Launched in 2017, this app allows users to dabao food from restaurants and hotels such as Grand Hyatt Singapore, by offering their unused food during the last 30 to 60 minutes of the day’s operations. With prices from $10/box, you’re looking to save up to 60% with this app! Treatsure is free to download and sign up on all phone. Due to Covid-19, some restaurants/hotels have ceased their operations. However, they have collaborated with grocery stores to sell surplus groceries for users.
Justdabao operates off their website currently (more details on their app are coming soon!) for consumers like us to get our food at a cheaper price. They have collaborated with eateries ranging from your main courses to desserts! The interesting thing is, you will not know what is inside your Shiok bag until you’re there to pick up your bag! Talking about living life on the edge. Eateries will fill these bags with whatever surplus of food they have left for the day, so it’s probably not for the pickiest of eaters. However, you will still be able to choose the cuisine, proximity of the eatery, and view google ratings to help you make a sound decision!
To order, simply click on the order button on the top of the website. Choose the region that is convenient for you to pick your Shiok bag from and select the cuisine you are craving for that day and make payment. After payment has been made, a confirmation email will be sent to you and you will then know the eatery’s name and location. Viola!
Psst… I’ve gotten a Shiok bag from Marche Movenpick for $6.90 which is inclusive of a drink, soup & a pastry, so that’s a pretty good deal in my opinion. – But please note, that that not everyone will receive the same thing and that’s an element of surprise for you!
Help reduce food wastage while satisfying your cravings at a cheaper price. Happy tummy, happy saving!
